Inside the S&P 500

How to read it

Blobs
One per index, left to right: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq, Russell 2000. Each sits above its card.
Colour
Today's move from yesterday's close. Red is falling, amber is flat, green is rising.
Height
Rising indexes float up; falling ones sink. The top and bottom of the lamp are a 1% move.
Size
Bigger means a bigger move either way. A quiet index is a small blob.
Economy
The smaller blobs in the lower row are the economy's groups: energy, metals, farm goods, rates and the dollar, the slow numbers, debt and money, shipping and trade, and the central banks. Same colour, height and size rules; each shows its latest move (they do not replay the day), and some are weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly numbers. They ride in their own row below the four indexes. Tap one, or its name, to see its members.
Motion
How choppy the last hour was. A steady index drifts slowly and stays whole; a choppy one churns and throws off droplets.
Mood
The average move of the four: Fearful, Uneasy, Calm, Buoyant or Euphoric.
Fear
The VIX, the market's own fear gauge.
Heartbeat
The lamp breathes with how much is trading.
Replay
When the market is closed, drag the dot on the line at the bottom to scrub back and forth through that trading day and watch the lamp move. The dot and the line take the mood colour, the dot glows in time with the heartbeat, the time floats above it, and the faint wavy line behind the track is the day's average move.
Inside
The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq have their companies inside them now (the Russell 2000 does not yet: no member list we can use). Tap a blob, its label or "Look inside" to open it: one blob per company, with the same colour, height and motion rules as the index (inside, the top and bottom of the cell are a 2.5% move: single companies move more than an index). Size is the company's market value, or its move if you switch. Companies cluster by sector — tech, energy, health care and the rest. Each cluster sits in a soft halo of its own fixed sector colour, the blobs inside keep the move colour, and the halo breathes with the heartbeat. A name tag on a dark pill sits beside each cluster big enough to label; on a phone the smallest clusters go unlabelled. A white ring marks a company moving against the index. The Dow has only 30 members, so it always shows all 30; the S&P 500 and Nasdaq show their top 50/100 or top 500 by market value (Nasdaq has 3,000+ listings, up to the top 500).
